You walk past the street, wind in your hair, smile on your lips. One hand is tucked in your coat. The other clutches a small bag slung over your shoulder.
The crowd is bustling, and you manoeuvre yourself through with a practised ease.
It’s just another day.
Mundane. Normal.
And then, you see me, walking just past you.
If you asked, I would tell you I’ve never met you before.
You’d agree.
I don’t know your name and you don’t know mine.
But nevertheless, you see me, really see me.
So maybe I smile.
Maybe you do.
Maybe you raise up a hand in greeting, a small wave.
Maybe I nod in response.
Maybe our shoulders brush as we cross paths, shuffling through.
Our shadows align under the morning sun. Whole.
Your eyes catch mine, and lock, just for a second. Linger. I look away.
And then, we’re both gone, just as quickly as we appeared.
It was just another day.
Mundane. Normal.
I didn’t know you and you didn’t know me.
We were two ships passing in the night, on different paths in the same waters.
But in that fraction of a second, we were as close as two people could ever be.
This moment; where one soul dips near another, like stars once a year brush the Earth.
Our hearts pulsed to the same beat, and our blood sang the same tune.
Resonant.
We were in resonance.
The moment is gone as quickly as it came.
But in all the years that’ll come to pass, you can’t help but believe.
You will never truly be alone.

Hi Natalie, Nice idea, well done. I was distracted by one phrase, though: where I come from a ‘two-fingered salute’ is a euphemism for a well-known rude gesture. Not what you meant in this case?

Oh I did not make that connection… definitley not what I meant. I think I just imagined the entire scene in my head, and when I was writing it, it just fit.
Thank you so much for pointing that out, I’ll definitley update it. ❤

To have and to hold, one moment of attention, then gone. This love is fleeting yet leaves a lifetime Impression. Life is a series of moments passing. You describe a significant memorable moment. This at the attosecond of connection is exquisite. Thank you for the prompt to pause and ponder. Chris T.

Your sense of pacing works well here; I like how you mix standalone words with full sentences. For some reason, this piece reminds me of the Radiohead song “Jigsaw Falling Into Place,” even though the two are somewhat different thematically. Insofar as grammar is concerned, there should not be an apostrophe in the line “Maybe our shoulder’s brush as we cross paths, shuffling through.” Also, if you’d prefer not to hear of my grammatical critiques, I am perfectly happy to cease them. (But, in my defense, I’m only doing what I can to help you make your writing more excellent.)

Why do we look away? When we don’t, when we stop and exchange a few words, we eventually become best of friends, don’t we?

It’s always cool when you read about a phenomenon you experience, especially when described vividly like so. Suddenly that aspect of being becomes more alive under a new light.
That optical connection with someone you’ve never known and may never ever know might just be a hint that we’re more related than we choose to believe.
Your writing is felt and personal. More ink to your pen Natalie.
