You close your eyes

When you close your eyes, your world is not void.

It is in flashes of red, of gold, of scandalously bright pinks, flickering like stars on the backdrop of a bruised black.

You can stand in the budding light of a winter dawn, the chilly morning breeze whipping around you, and shades of pastel pinks and oranges bloom into being.

In the punishing glare of a mid-day sun, your world is a flaring red: it soaks you in delicious warmth, drowning you in an ocean of scarlet.

When the night shifts from dusk to twilight, the wilting glare of the fading sun shines a queer royal blue, embroidered with strands of sea-silver.

When you close your eyes, your world is magic.

The world outside is harsh, full of dull greys and insipid whites. But it doesn’t have to be so. The world beneath your eyelids is beautiful, and it’s yours.

So you don’t doubt, you don’t question.

You believe. Ignorance is key.

This place you see, of laughter and joy, of everlasting beauty and frivolous magic, is real. It has to be.

Because when you can’t trust yourself, what is there to live for?

You turn a blind eye, let yourself get caught up in the charade you create.

The truth is right before you, they say, but they’ll never understand.

You do not want to see. You do not want to know. You don’t ask. You don’t doubt.

You close your eyes, and believe.

PS In May 2019, I will be moving to a new web address. I’m shifting to a personal domain and I’m so, so excited for you to see it! Buying my domain is giving me so much more freedom for new features, design, and I can’t wait for you to get started there.

But on the downside, all those of you who’ve subscribed to my blog here WILL NOT be notified of new posts anymore. I’d hate for you to miss out just because I’ve shifted addresses, but WordPress doesn’t offer anything to straighten this out.

So to make sure the change is as smooth as possible, I’d be so grateful if you’d enter your email ID below so we can stay in touch. You can opt-out any time, no hard feelings. I hate spam and I’ll only be reaching out every two weeks or so for blog updates, I promise.

Thank you so much for all your support. ❤

The visions you evoke here are astoundingly beautiful. Your word choice is on point. On top of that, the themes of belief in a certain sort of magic and of devotion to a personal ideal of beauty despite others’ demands that you face the cold ugliness of reality are stated quite eloquently. Your writing is a blessing to the internet.

“When you close your eyes, your world is magic.”

As for motivation, I find that I can't pinpoint exactly where I get my ideas: it's more of a single afflatus, a flash of thought, disappearing as quickly as it arrives if I fail to capture it on paper. On reflection, I guess it started with the realization that the colours you see with open eyes are never the same as the ones you see when they are closed. That, merging with the idea that sometimes, you simply prefer to lie to yourself, to close your eyes and pretend the world is radiant, was probably where this piece emerged from.

    2. Advent Voice says:

That is a daily struggle with me and my associates. A lot of them love to say that because I send so much time separating the truths from the lie of the diction of others, I am cold and crass and believe the world to be less than what it could be. That I diminish the radiance from life with my constant need to show the world as it really, an experiment with flaws. A lot of them don’t want to believe in the flaws that are manifested to me. Continuing to travel down the same paths that have gotten them no where in the past ten years. I am made to ask myself how can people be ok with going nowhere for ten years. Then I saw your post and thought, “Right up my ally.” I tried to add your blog to my twitter account and there was some mention of an account offline or not working. I knew they were not talking about me because I was just on it, so I thought they were suggesting yours. Now I am not sure what that was all about. I still want to share this post with my friends and associates. Just to add fuel to my fire and maybe get some people to read more your works.
