A litany, a promise, a prayer.

Run.

I run so fast, I will tear out of this sordid flesh, out of gilded skin and ivory bone.

I see myself: I am hollow, a pit of red.

I am the colour of blood, the colour of rage. The colour of flesh, the colour of shame.

I can see it: I am shackled, by these strands of vein. They coil around me, tighter, tighter, I cannot breathe.

I see the cage, clearer than ever, this prison of flesh.

I see this promise, I hear its oath.

Run, it whispers. If you run fast enough, you’ll break free.

And so, I do.

I run on fear, I run on fire.

I run for pain, the excruciating burn of desire. I burn for the exquisite absence of thought.

I run so fast, I leave behind my self, I will rust away until there is nothing left of me. Out of breath, out of life.

I want to lose myself, in the purest sense of the phrase, I want to forget, to be misplaced. I want to leave behind this life.

Bone to dust; blood can rust.

I run to death.

I see the cage, clearer than ever, this prison of red.

I hear these voices, I trust in their message.

Run, they whisper. If you run fast enough, you’ll break free.

I know I can.

I know I can.

  4. we all try to break free from the restraints of our human form, but, without our bodies, we couldn’t exist anywhere else, unless, we find a way, for our souls to keep going on after ourbodies stopped working. A very thought-provoking piece.

Very evocative poem, I feel your desire to break free!
Ego attachment to our thoughts and body leads to suffering, I think we all long to break free of this.

I’ve just reread you poem, you have a very interesting and unusual style, I just realised how your sentiment is very similar to a Buddhist meditation on the body, they contemplate each aspect of the physical body to strip it of any beauty, its reduced to mere flesh. This is intended to prevent any attachment to the body so that when it starts to age, or gets injured etc. the degree of suffering Is lessened.

I used to run for a moment in my life. I had to rediscover the person I loved (myself). Once I did, I saw my flesh, my bones, and even the people around me as my tools that I grew to respectively understand and love as more than my tools. They became my muse.

You write so fun and beautifully. Don’t run. I’m inspired at least.

  44. Hi I just want to say how much I really enjoyed your work. I can’t help but feel a deep pain in the things you write about and I’m wondering, are you writing about forced marriage? It’s just you use phrases like I am the colour of blood, of rage and then you mention shame. The desire to be free is so strong in your work and somehow I really connect with a heartfelt pain. I do love your work please keep writing. Julie
