The Writer

Take my hand and I promise you art.

You will be the canvas of my prose. I’ll dip my pen into the ink of your eyes and engrave myself onto your heart.

Shreya Vikram (alias Natalie Swift) is a writer who prides herself on her ability to blur the lines between poetry and prose, intensity and elegance.

She aims to create beautiful literature with an underlying theme of ‘never lying, nothing true’: taking inspiration from her own life and morphing it into fiction.

She hopes that in the process, you’ll find something that speaks to you.

Dear Shreya, Why did you choose Natalie Swift as your pen name? Did the book “Tom Swift and his Electric Pen” have anything to do with your choice of a pen name?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Mmm no, I haven’t read it. Is it something you would recommend?
It was a completely impetuous decision, to be honest. WordPress asked for my name, and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be associated with my site yet, so I typed in the first thing I thought of. I can’t even remember where I saw it.

I love what you say about prose and poetry converging. It’s something I was trained out of a bit by being told my words were too flowery. I’ve ended up separating them but sometimes they creep back together, especially in free-form verse or descriptive writing. You’re creating or re-forming an artform with exceptional eloquence and it makes me want to dive into the form.

    1. Mmm I can definitely relate to that. I used to draw a line between an indulgence in purple prose and something more suitable to today’s writing. But I find that florid language is my strongest link, so I try to blend it in whenever I can.
I hope you find a middle-ground for yourself as well. ❤

    1. Well, all creative work is to some extent: fiction, isn’t it? No matter how you label a piece, as a memoir or a blog, when life comes down to paper, there will always be hyperbole, embellishment, a romantasized, exxagerated state of affairs that only reflects off reality. I think one huge misconception about the entire of the writers community, or any creative pusuit for that matter, is that we live only what we write. For me, that couldn’t be farther from the truth, and that was what I was referring to.
Keeping a blog suggests that you’re putting the entire stretch of your life onto paper for the world to see, but this site is like mismatched bits and pieces of a puzzle that will never make sense without those missing chunks. There are no half-truths, but I can’t say that all of these are downright lies either. People who know me in ‘real life’ will never relate me to this, and neither will the people I’ve met online recognize me.
Where will it fit in then?

And I’ll definitely check it out as soon as I can, though it may take a while. ❤

When Natalie responded with the word “hyperbole”, all I could think of was hyperbolic space crochet and I had to look the word up. Now I know, learnt something new again. As my son says”Everyday is a school day” and this proves it. greenankhworks, all fiction is nothing true and also as it’s from the mind so is never lying. Perhaps it’s just putting a different more creative perception on things in there, a swimmer becomes a mermaid and something cleverly done becomes magic!

What a great old plain Natalie Swift take me or leave me name you have. Plain as mine. My writing ambition, probably like yours, has always been to write beautiful prose, prose such that you and readers say, “My goodness, isn’t that beautiful?”. So beautiful that as you write it and the words appear you cry.

Thank you for following my blog. I wrote one called “How to Write Mesmerizing Prose” that contains wonderful examples of beautiful, mesmerizing prose. You may want to take a look at it.

    there are many eyes
    status quo, has many minds
    many inventions

    to change someone’s mind
    open it, before trying to
    add, subtract, divide

    someone must suspect
    you hear and understand them
    before they listen

    changes you suggest
    must exist somewhere, persist
    until they can see

    your candle must be lit
bright, so they can regard it
    and rely on it

Hi Natalie. Chaos comes a goes, but the trick is to let it go and concentrate on the light beyond. If in doubt leave it behind in the bowels of the computer and tread your own path regardless. Love, David

    3. It definitely is. I love the way the ‘awards’ here are so holistic instead of the usual competitive ones online
It’s so much more encouraging and personal. I’ve met some of my most closest blogging ‘friends’ through being nominated or nominating someone else and its amazing how you can forge these relationships with people you haven’t even met ❤

The blogosphere is a different community in comparison to Facebook. There are trolls out there but, for the most part, there is more respect. And…WordPress people will actually “talk” to you & assist. Facebook…good luck getting any help with anything.

I have discovered some incredibly talented & kind people “out here”…awards or not.

  79. Howdy, Natalie! I wanted to take the time to pop in and give a proper thank you. I almost never (ever) stop by anyone’s place and actually “thank them” for following my blog and I’ll tell ya why. Because it just seems so darn pretentious. Like I’m supposed to be holding a bouquet of roses and waving my hand sideways in a slow, silly fashion and saying, “I’d like to thank…” (etc.) Ick. I’d rather notice YOU- because I am, after all, at your place! How self-absorbed must I be to take the time and go to another person’s site and then thank them for “whatever it is that has to do with “my site”. Natalie, these are the things that keep me up at 4:55 a.m., apparently. My guy’s porn addiction also does, and that’s why I can’t sleep. Apparently. You may wonder why I took the time to comment here when I usually don’t if someone follows me, and I’ll tell you plainly: You have a rocking place here! It’s all like- doomy and gloomy and I love that crap! (No really, I do. Haha…In a romantic-like way.) Let’s just say, it speaks to me. Especially right now. I’m betting your featured images are borrowed from other people on the web, and if that’s the case, that’s pretty standard these days. But if there’s even a snowflake’s chance in hell that they’re yours, well then I’m beyond impressed. Anywho- wanted to pop in and say, “Hey!”

    “Hey!” 😉

    1. Haha, I’m completely with you on that…people follow your blog because they want to read more from you; not to do you a favour!
I’m so glad you liked my blog and that you could resonate with it!
And I wish I could say the pics were mine, but unfortunately, I suck at anything related to the camera. (I tell myself that writing can make up for the pictures, or the lack thereof.)
I select the images on my site from Unsplash… they have some pretty amazing photos on the site and all of it is open to the world. I wish I could find some way to credit the artists but WordPress only allows that on normal pics apparently; not featured ones.

      Back at you!
Looking forward to seeing you around, Birgitta! ❤

Yes of course we have to challenge the status quo in our writing, in our lives and work for social justice and our planet every day. Let us try to connect through words and deeds. If we have a clear vision and focus then we will create positive possibilities all around us despite the current evil that stalks the land (especially but not just in the USA).
